Week 1 — Heavy watering
Water twice daily — morning and late afternoon. The turf must stay moist at all times. Lift a corner to check: the soil beneath should be wet 5cm deep. Do not let it dry out.
Week 2 — Reduce to once daily
Water once per day, preferably in the morning. The roots are beginning to anchor into the soil. Avoid watering in the evening to prevent fungal disease.
Week 3 — Taper off
Water every second day. By now the lawn should feel firmly rooted — try to pull a corner and it should resist. If it lifts easily, continue daily watering.
First mow — Week 3–4
Mow for the first time when the grass reaches 6–8cm. Set the blade high — never remove more than one-third of the blade length. This encourages lateral spreading.
Fertilise at 6 weeks
Apply a balanced lawn fertiliser (3:2:1 or similar) at 6 weeks after installation. This gives the lawn the nutrients it needs to thicken up and go fully green.

Keep children and pets off the new lawn for the first 2 weeks. The turf needs to root undisturbed. After 3 weeks, light foot traffic is fine.
