Accepted Answer

Question 7

Which grass is best for Cape Town?

Accepted Answer

The best grass depends on the amount of sunlight, shade, foot traffic, irrigation and the intended use of the lawn. Kikuyu is popular for sunny areas, LM Berea is suitable for more shaded gardens, while Cynodone/Kweek is often chosen for high-traffic and sports applications.

Question 8

What is Kikuyu grass?

Accepted Answer

Kikuyu is a hardy, fast-growing warm-season grass that performs particularly well in sunny areas. It is widely used for residential lawns, large gardens, parks, sports areas and other open spaces.

Question 9

Is Kikuyu grass drought resistant?

Accepted Answer

Kikuyu is relatively drought tolerant once established, although adequate watering is important during establishment and periods of prolonged dry weather. Good soil preparation and irrigation will help the lawn establish successfully.

Question 10

Is Kikuyu grass good for full sun?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Kikuyu generally performs best where it receives plenty of direct sunlight and is one of the popular choices for sunny Cape Town gardens and larger lawn areas.

Question 11

What is LM Berea grass?

Accepted Answer

LM Berea is a soft, attractive lawn grass that is more shade tolerant than Kikuyu. It is commonly used in gardens where trees, buildings or other structures reduce direct sunlight.

Question 12

Is LM Berea suitable for shaded gardens?

Accepted Answer

Yes. LM Berea can be a good option for areas receiving less direct sunlight. However, no natural lawn performs well in extremely dark conditions, so the amount of available light should be considered before installation.

Question 13

What is Cynodone or Kweek grass?

Accepted Answer

Cynodone, commonly known as Kweek or Bermuda grass, is a fine-bladed, dense turf that is well suited to high-traffic areas, sports fields and applications requiring a hard-wearing lawn.

Question 14

Which grass is best for a sports field?

Accepted Answer

Cynodone/Kweek can be an excellent choice for many sports applications because of its dense growth and ability to handle traffic. The correct grass depends on the sport, site conditions, maintenance requirements and budget.

Question 15

Can you recommend the right grass for my property?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you are unsure whether Kikuyu, LM Berea or Cynodone is best, tell us about your garden, sunlight, soil, irrigation and expected foot traffic. We can recommend a suitable option.

Question 16

What is roll-on lawn?

Accepted Answer

Roll-on lawn, also called instant lawn or sod, is mature grass that has been grown and cut into rolls or sections. The rolls are transported to the property and installed directly onto a prepared lawn area.

Question 17

How does the lawn installation process work?

Accepted Answer

A typical installation involves assessing the area, preparing the ground, improving or adding suitable soil where required, levelling the surface, laying the grass rolls closely together and watering the newly installed lawn.

Question 18

Do you prepare the soil before installing the grass?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Proper ground and soil preparation is an important part of a successful lawn installation. Depending on the site, this can include clearing the area, levelling, adding topsoil or compost and preparing the surface for the new lawn.

Question 19

Can you supply topsoil and compost?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We supply topsoil and compost for lawn preparation and can deliver and spread these materials as part of the project where required.

Question 20

Do I need to remove my existing lawn first?

Accepted Answer

Not always. It depends on the condition of the existing lawn, soil, weeds, levels and the type of installation required. We can assess the area and advise you on the best preparation method.

Question 21

Can you install grass over existing soil?

Accepted Answer

In some cases, yes. The existing soil needs to be suitable and properly prepared. If the soil is poor, compacted, contaminated or contains excessive weeds or rubble, additional preparation may be necessary.

Question 22

Can you level my garden before installing the lawn?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Where required, lawn preparation can include levelling and grading the area before the grass is installed. The exact work depends on the existing ground conditions.

Question 23

Can you install lawn around trees?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can install lawn around trees and landscaped areas, provided the site has suitable conditions for the selected grass variety.

Question 24

Can you install lawn around swimming pools?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Lawn can be installed around swimming pools where suitable. The area should have adequate drainage, soil preparation and sufficient sunlight for the selected grass.

Question 25

Can you install lawn in a new development?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We work with homeowners, developers, complexes and construction projects and can supply and install lawns for newly built properties and developments.

Question 26

How much does lawn installation cost in Cape Town?

Accepted Answer

The cost depends on several factors, including the grass variety, lawn size, ground preparation, soil requirements, access, delivery distance and installation requirements. Contact us for a free quotation based on your specific property.

Question 27

Do you charge per square metre?

Accepted Answer

Lawn projects are commonly calculated according to the area in square metres, but the final quotation can also include preparation, soil, delivery and installation requirements.

Question 28

Does the price include grass installation?

Accepted Answer

This depends on the quotation and scope of work. We can quote for supply only or for a complete supply-and-installation service.

Question 29

Is delivery included?

Accepted Answer

Delivery depends on the project location, quantity and distance. Your quotation will outline the applicable delivery costs.

Question 30

Are there additional costs for difficult access?

Accepted Answer

Potentially. Restricted access, steep areas, long carrying distances or other site difficulties can affect labour and installation costs. We assess these requirements when preparing the quotation.

Question 31

Do you install small lawns?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We handle both small residential gardens and large commercial or sports-field projects.

Question 32

Do you have a minimum order?

Accepted Answer

Contact us with your requirements. We aim to accommodate both smaller residential orders and larger projects.

Question 33

How do I calculate how much grass I need?

Accepted Answer

Measure the length and width of the lawn area in metres and multiply them together: Length × Width = Square metres. For irregular gardens, divide the area into smaller rectangles or sections and add the measurements together.

Question 34

Can you help me calculate the amount of grass I need?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Our website includes a lawn and topsoil calculator that can help you estimate the amount of grass, topsoil, compost or lawn dressing required.

Question 35

Can you calculate topsoil requirements?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Topsoil requirements depend on the area and the depth required. Our calculator can help estimate the volume required.

Question 36

Can you calculate compost requirements?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We can help calculate the approximate amount of compost required based on the area and application depth.

Question 37

Should I order extra grass?

Accepted Answer

It is generally sensible to allow for cutting, shaping and wastage, particularly where the garden has curves, corners or irregular sections. We can advise you on the appropriate quantity for your project.

Question 38

When should I water newly installed grass?

Accepted Answer

Newly installed grass needs consistent moisture while the roots establish. The exact watering schedule depends on the season, weather, soil and grass variety.

Question 39

How long does new lawn take to establish?

Accepted Answer

Establishment time varies depending on grass variety, weather, watering, soil conditions and maintenance. With proper preparation and care, the lawn should progressively root into the soil after installation.

Question 40

Can I walk on newly installed lawn?

Accepted Answer

It is best to minimise unnecessary traffic immediately after installation while the grass establishes. Your installer can advise you when the lawn is ready for normal use.

Question 41

When can I mow my new lawn?

Accepted Answer

The first mowing should generally be done once the grass has established sufficiently and rooted into the soil. Avoid removing too much leaf growth at once.

Question 42

Does new lawn need fertiliser?

Accepted Answer

New lawn can benefit from appropriate fertilisation, but the correct product and application rate depend on the soil and grass variety. Over-fertilising can damage a lawn.

Question 43

How often should an established lawn be watered?

Accepted Answer

There is no single watering schedule for every lawn. Watering requirements depend on the grass type, season, rainfall, soil, temperature and irrigation system.
